Glued-in steel rods in timber members

Steel rods glued into timber members parallel to the grain can transfer high forces within a relatively small area. Glued-in threaded rods provide a wide range of connection options. The Hilti GIR module enables connections with glued-in steel rods to be designed simply and efficiently.

Hilti GIR according to ETA-19/0194 dated 12 September 2019 and ETA-20/0834 dated 16 March 2026.

STEEL RODS & ADHESIVE

The bond between the glued-in threaded rods (Hilti HAS-U) and the timber member is achieved using Hilti HIT-RE 500 adhesive. The Hilti dispensing system allows the injection material to be filled directly through the drilled hole, eliminating the need for bypass holes.

VERIFICATIONS

For tension connections using Hilti GIR, the following verifications are performed:

Verification of the tensile resistance of the steel rod
Verification of the bond resistance
Verification of the tensile resistance of the timber
Verification of block failure
Verification of ductility

For reinforcement against compression perpendicular to the grain using Hilti GIR, the following verifications are performed:

Verification of the compression-perpendicular-to-grain resistance of the unreinforced cross-section
Verification of the compression-perpendicular-to-grain resistance in the support area
Verification of the compression-perpendicular-to-grain resistance in the area of the threaded-rod ends
