Design of pin-ended columns and compression members

Columns and compression members are subjected to compressive forces parallel to the grain. Due to their relatively small cross-sectional dimensions in relation to their length, these members must be checked for buckling.Druckstäbe werden parallel zu ihrer Faserrichtung auf Druck beansprucht. Aufgrund der geringen Querschnittsabmessungen im Verhältnis zur Stablänge müssen diese Bauteile auf Knicken untersucht werden.

Module T12

Single-piece columns and compression members can be designed using Module T12 in accordance with DIN EN 1995-1-1:2010-12 in conjunction with the applicable National Application Documents.

MATERIALS

The following materials are available:

  • Softwood
  • Hardwood
  • Glued laminated timber
  • BauBuche according to ETA-14/0354 dated 11 July 2018

BauBuche can be designed free of charge in the basic version of the module.

CROSS-SECTIONS

The following cross-sections are available:

  • Circular
  • Rectangular

VERIFICATIONS

The following verifications are performed:

  • Stability verification
  • Stability verification in the fire design situation (R30 to R120) using the reduced cross-section method

Design basis

Columns and compression members are designed in accordance with DIN EN 1995-1-1:2010-12 in conjunction with the applicable National Application Documents.

The effects of creep must be taken into account in service classes 2 and 3 if the design value of the permanent and quasi-permanent load components exceeds 70% of the design value of the total load. Further documentation on this topic is available here.

Construction details

Designing column heads

In timber engineering, connection details often reflect the quality of the structural design. In addition to the design of structural members and connections, Ingtools provides a wide range of ideas for developing efficient and practical structural details.

Our Academy provides technical literature and construction details. Discover design principles for the following applications:

  • Direct support of beams on continuous columns
  • Solutions for avoiding compression perpendicular to the grain in continuous beams
  • Connection details for timber columns to concrete slabs
